Advice for Buyers
1. Always view the vehicle before payment
Never send money for a vehicle you have not seen in person. Inspect the vehicle, verify its condition, and review all documentation before making any payment.
2. Verify vehicle documents
Check the following and ensure all details match:
- V5C Registration Certificate (Logbook)
- Vehicle Registration Number (VRN)
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- MOT history
- Service history
- Identification of the seller
3. Obtain a vehicle history check
Consider obtaining an independent vehicle history report to check:
- Outstanding finance
- Insurance write-off status
- Theft records
- Mileage discrepancies
- Previous ownership history
4. Be cautious of unusually low prices
If a vehicle appears significantly cheaper than similar vehicles on the market, proceed with caution and investigate thoroughly.
5. Test drive safely
Only test drive a vehicle with appropriate insurance cover and verify that the seller has authority to sell the vehicle.
6. Use secure payment methods
Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Where possible, use secure and traceable payment methods. Never send funds through gift cards, cryptocurrency, money transfer services, or other untraceable methods.
Advice for Sellers
1. Keep control of your vehicle
Never leave potential buyers unsupervised with your vehicle, keys, documents, engine bay, or diagnostic equipment.
2. Protect against vehicle tampering
Remain present during inspections and test drives. Be cautious of individuals attempting to access engine components, coolant systems, oil reservoirs, electronic modules, or vehicle diagnostics without your supervision.
3. Verify the buyer's identity
Where appropriate, request identification before allowing a test drive.
4. Confirm payment before releasing the vehicle
Never hand over keys, the vehicle, the logbook, or ownership documents until cleared funds have been received.
5. Beware of common scams
Examples include:
- Fake payment confirmations
- Overpayment scams
- Deposit scams
- Courier collection scams
- Identity fraud
- Vehicle tampering schemes designed to reduce the sale price
Reporting suspicious activity
If you believe a listing, buyer, seller, or communication is suspicious, please report it to us immediately at security@1poundmotors.com. We review reports and may remove listings, suspend accounts, or cooperate with law enforcement where appropriate.
